Phototoxicity Assessment

Genetic and mutagenicity assessment

Botanical extracts often have very complex components containing thousands of chemical substances, and specific mixtures can vary greatly depending on a variety of factors. To ensure the safe use of botanical ingredients, Lifeasible provides technical services in the areas of the botanical matrix (plant species, extraction site, etc.), production process (removal of harmful components, reduction of solvent residues, etc.), and analysis of raw material composition (detection of the type and amount of risky components in the raw material). In safety testing, we also focus on the phototoxicity of plant extracts, which can enrich the scope of your research and add to the safe use of plant extracts.

Our Services

Phototoxicity refers to a skin toxicity reaction caused by exposure to ultraviolet light following primary contact with a chemical substance on the skin, or a similar reaction that occurs when a chemical substance is applied to the whole body and exposed to ultraviolet light. Especially in the field of cosmetics, some plant extracts can cause some damage to the skin. For example, the active ingredients of plant extracts in blemish-removing cosmetics may cause phototoxicity or photosensitive dermatitis in the skin under UV light. To determine the phototoxicity of the plant extracts, we will apply the plant extracts to the hairless skin on the backs of the experimental animals and observe the skin reaction after exposure to long-wave ultraviolet (UVA) rays for a certain period.

  • Preparation of the test substance (determination of concentration).
  • Selection of test animals. We provide adult white rabbits or albino guinea pigs as test animals.
  • The light source is an important test condition in the phototoxicity test. We provide pure UVA as the irradiation light source, which avoids the interference of medium-wave ultraviolet (UVB) rays on the test results.
  • Experimental design (set up positive control).
  • Analysis and evaluation of results. We will observe the formation of erythema and scab, and observe the formation of edema to determine whether the tested plant extracts are phototoxic or not.

Phototoxicity testing service flow of plant extracts

  • The rest of the optional test indicators
    • Dermal irritation: reversible inflammatory changes in the skin of the experimental animals after application of the plant extract.
    • Dermal corrosion: irreversible tissue damage caused locally by the application of the plant extract to the skin of the experimental animals.

Why Choose Us?

Lifeasible offers plant extract phototoxicity testing services for phototoxicity studies and safety assessment of cosmetics and new plant extract ingredients. We adopt the basic principles of randomization, control, and repetition in our phototoxicity test design, which are in line with the basic principles of toxicological testing. We provide true, complete, accurate, and traceable test data. Please feel free to contact our staff to submit your requirements to bring your project to fruition as soon as possible.
